Men and Emotions: The Importance of Vulnerability

Our society has laid down different expectations for women and men when it comes to processing and expressing emotions. Women are sensitive and should show their feelings, including sadness and fear, whereas men are strong and need to keep it together.

This toxicity leads to men being seen as weak in the moments they do let their guard down. The result? Generations upon generations of men who suffer in silence, who suppress their feelings and emotions, and never speak of the havoc it’s placing on their mental health.

The Impact of Invulnerability

So, what’s the consequence of expecting men to be invulnerable?

As humans, we are ingrained with emotions and need to process them. When we’re happy, we naturally show it, and when we’re sad, we want to cry.

However, ignoring these feelings can wreak havoc on our mental health. It leads to increased anxiety and depression, but for men, it also increases the feelings of worthlessness and the risk of committing suicide.

We teach men from childhood that they need to toughen up, act like men, and not cry. It doesn’t fade as they age. The result? Men who can’t express emotions or can’t cope with their feelings. This is the start of toxic masculinity. This is where we need to nip it in the bud.

Learning to Be Vulnerable

The only solution is to let men know it’s okay to be vulnerable, to express their emotions. But how do you do that? 

1. Recognize what you’re feeling and accept it. Allow yourself to express your emotions.
